Raw

As I've explored these crazy dietary restrictions in past months, one of the things I've tried is switching to raw milk. ie: straight from the cow. However, due to some stubborn old prejudices it is still illegal to sell raw milk for drinking... unless you "own" the cow.

 So, we bought a cow!

Well, actually, we bought just part of a cow, enough to render us "owners" and therefore recipients of its milk. And oh, is it delicious. While hesitant at first, we've all come to love and even prefer it to the nutrient-stripped store bought kind. Homogenization and pasteurization, while having its place in history, has its downsides. Namely, it kills not only the bad, but the good bacteria along with most of the milk's nutrients and all of its healthful, living enzymes that make it such a miracle food.

Did you know fresh milk has been used medicinally for thousands of years? The processing of conventional milk also renders it terribly difficult to digest (which is why "lactose-intolerant" folks usually enjoy raw milk, no problemo.)

Anywhoo... we love it. We're part of a "herdshare" here in Canberra and receive deliveries every week.

A few months back we headed out to visit our lactating ladies at the farm over the Queen's birthday weekend. Lovely outing.

They welcomed us into their cozy farmhouse and fed us fresh made brie and other cheeses. Peeking in on such quaint, functional living arrangements out in the country with chickens pecking under the clothesline - oh, how I'd love to live on a farm!

We had the kids sit up atop the car as we helped block the path where they were being herded in for milking. Masterful work, those farmers do. These beasts are not small!

As you can imagine, a 2 year old's dream...
Thanks for sharing your mama's milk with us, little guys!
