School Break

Back to school. Two weeks of Sydney, the beach, off-roading, LDS General Conference, stitches, and a lemonade stand among other things. But I think the fave was just the freedom & quality time.

This was slept in most nights.

You know it's a good book... And some excellent choreography sessions with friends.
See, flowers even sprout from the rocky hillsides - never seen such a brilliant spring.
Enjoying a little lunch break (ie: barf break) and some fresh air on the bumpy roads.

Oatmeal cinnamon rolls are the new tradition for Conference morning.
(Better than Cinnabon, friends. Recipe in comments below.)

Lots of biking.

Even snuck off for a few trail ride "dates."

Aren't we all cute and matchy-matchy?? We only ride in style...

Speaking of riding in style - check out this family bike we rented on Lake Burley Griffin. Between the weather, the blossoms and sheer enthusiasm of the kids, definitely made a memory.

Summer was thoroughly confused and enthralled trying to figure this contraption out.

The best was when we stopped so I could feed Summer (Darren wasn't about to escalate our spectacle by condoning a feed ON the bike) and the kids jumped on for a spin. Hardly touching the pedals, they started running people off the sidewalk, narrowly escaping a dip in the lake at every turn. Many a concerned look was cast our way. Kinda hilarious.

 The required tree climbing breaks...

Plenty o' beds full of exhausted kids. Good times.

  1. I want to see pictures of swooping! You are seriously the funnest mum to let them sleep in their clubhouse. My kids would be so envious if they knew! Oh, and may I please have your cinnamon roll recipe??? We use to make them all the time, but I'm afraid ours were always pillsbury.. something I can't find here lol!

  2. Absolutely - it's from the Keeping Up cookbook I blogged about a while back:
    2 C water
    1 C quick oats
    3 T butter
(bring to boil, simmer/stir one minute, remove to cool)
    4 t yeast
    1/2 C warm water
    1 T sugar
(stir together, let stand 5 mins)
    4 1/2 C flour
    2 t salt
    1/3 C brown sugar
(Mix in mixer with dough hook, adding cooled oats & proofed yeast, on medium about 5 mins. Dough will be sticky, not pulling away from sides, but add more flour if it looks "wet.")

Cover, let rise in warm place til doubled (1hr?)

Punch down and turn onto well oiled surface. Cut in half. With oiled hands, press each half into 12"x9" rectangle. Spread EACH w/:
    1 T melted butter
    1/2 C brown sugar
    1 t cinnamon

Roll dough up jelly roll style, slice each into 12 one inch slices.

Place slices close together in 2 greased 9x13 pans. Let rise 20-30 mins then bake at 375 F for 20-25 mins.

Cool 5 mins before frosting w/:
    1/2 C butter, softened
    2 T milk
    2 C pwd sugar
    1/2 t maple extract (or 1 t vanilla)
