Astrophotographer

Darren here. So I want to get a telescope and take pictures of galaxies far, far away. I've always wanted to. And maybe contribute to galaxyzoo.org & stuff like that, explore for real what I've only done virtually via Microsoft's WorldWide Telescope. With the kids getting old enough and with lots of camping trips foreseen deep into the dark outback, it might just be time. That line of thinking sat me down in front of the computer at 10pm Saturday, the beginning of a ridiculous no-break, six hour research frenzy. By the end, I had joined a astronomy forum and ordered a book. Despite having downloaded what seemed to me an immense amount of knowledge of telescopes and astrophotography, I had no idea what to do next. This stuff is complicated. And expensive. But you can't believe the quality of these photographs taken by hobbiests. I'll include some below. Hopefully, you'll see some of Darvey's in the future. Ride a wormhole there and tell me if they are any good.

  1. Hi Iv! :) I finally came across a comment that you wrote on my blog some time ago. I am sorry that I did not see it earlier when I may have been able to be of some help with your questions! However, I have enjoyed reading through your blog entries, and would love to give you any help I can while you are here in Australia :) If you ever come up to Brisbane (recommended :) - we might meet, but in the meantime I can be a friend from here if you would like. For any longer conversations I would be happy to ring you if that is easier? My email address is: sandragmunro@hotmail.com
We lived in Papua New Guinea for 4 years some time ago, and I remember how interesting it was to be an ex-patriot in an exciting new country.

  2. Hi Sandy! Thanks for the note. I spent a couple months in Brisbane many years ago and do hope to get up there again, so it would be nice to meet. (My email is iveymitchell@yahoo.com) I hope you'll correct me if I post anything incorrectly about the things we're discovering here! Good to have an Aussie view to keep it real :)

  3. Darren. You just made it official. You are a nerd!

You are on some real binges over there--first the 4x4 and now astrophotography? Look up digiscoping for birds, i saw IV is interested in birds, that might be a little more manageable.
